Gulf Currencies and Ethiopia: AED, SAR, and QAR Explained

The Gulf is home to one of the largest Ethiopian migrant communities. Here's why AED, SAR, and QAR exchange rates matter so much to millions of Ethiopians.

The countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman — are home to an estimated 1.5 to 2 million Ethiopian migrant workers. This makes Gulf currencies among the most economically significant foreign currencies for Ethiopian households, and the AED/ETB, SAR/ETB, and QAR/ETB exchange rates are closely tracked across the country.

Saudi Riyal (SAR): The Largest Ethiopian Workforce

Saudi Arabia hosts the largest number of Ethiopian migrants in the GCC, with hundreds of thousands working as domestic workers, laborers in construction, agriculture, and service industries. The SAR/ETB exchange rate directly affects the purchasing power of remittances sent home by Ethiopian workers in the Kingdom.

A key fact about the SAR: it has been pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of 3.75 SAR per USD since 1986. This means SAR/ETB movements essentially mirror USD/ETB movements, providing a degree of predictability for Ethiopian workers planning their remittances.

UAE Dirham (AED): Dubai and Abu Dhabi's Ethiopian Community

The UAE, particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi, is another major destination for Ethiopian migrants. Ethiopia and the UAE have also developed significant trade and investment ties, with UAE companies investing in Ethiopian real estate, agriculture, and logistics.

Like the SAR, the AED is pegged to the USD at a fixed rate (3.67 AED per USD), making it another stable Gulf currency for Ethiopian workers to track relative to the Birr.

Qatari Riyal (QAR): A Growing Presence

Qatar has been an increasingly significant destination for Ethiopian workers, particularly following the FIFA World Cup 2022 preparations that drove significant demand for construction and hospitality labor. The QAR is also pegged to the USD (at 3.64 QAR per USD), maintaining predictable exchange dynamics relative to the ETB.

Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD): The Highest-Value Currency

The Kuwaiti Dinar is consistently one of the world's most valuable currencies per unit, trading at rates far above the USD. Ethiopian workers in Kuwait send remittances in KWD, and even small amounts in Dinar translate into significant ETB values, making the KWD/ETB rate particularly impactful per transaction.

Practical Implications

For Ethiopian workers in the Gulf, understanding the relationship between their local currency and the ETB helps them: - Plan the timing of remittances to maximize ETB received by their families. - Understand why their transfers sometimes result in different amounts at the receiving end even when they send the same nominal amount. - Choose between sending through bank transfers, mobile money, or specialized diaspora remittance services.

EthioForex tracks live rates for all major Gulf currencies against the ETB, updated from all major Ethiopian commercial banks throughout each business day.
